One of the most common questions we receive at Organic Solutions is: "How much does an STP cost in India?" The honest answer is: it depends — and the way you frame the question matters enormously.
There are two very different ways to think about STP cost: capital cost (what you pay upfront) and total cost of ownership (what you pay over the plant's lifetime). Most people focus on the first and ignore the second — and that is why so many Indian STPs end up being financial disasters.
Capital Cost of an STP in India
Capital costs vary by technology, capacity, site conditions, and location. Rough indicative ranges:
- 50 KLD STP: Rs. 15–40 lakhs (varies by technology)
- 100 KLD STP: Rs. 25–70 lakhs
- 250 KLD STP: Rs. 50–1.5 crores
- 500 KLD STP: Rs. 80–2.5 crores
These are indicative ranges only. Actual costs depend heavily on technology choice, civil work requirements, site accessibility, and treatment standards required. Always get a detailed site-specific quotation.
The Hidden Costs Nobody Tells You About
Electricity
A conventional 100 KLD STP typically consumes 25–40 units of electricity per day. At Rs. 8–10 per unit, that's Rs. 75,000–1,20,000 per year — just in electricity. Over 20 years, that's Rs. 15–24 lakhs. Plus genset costs for backup during power cuts.
Chemicals
Coagulants, flocculants, disinfectants — a conventional STP requires continuous chemical purchases. Annual chemical costs for a 100 KLD plant: Rs. 2–5 lakhs.
Sludge Disposal
Sludge dewatering equipment, transportation, and disposal fees add significant recurring costs. Many operators simply neglect sludge management — causing system failure and compliance issues.
Skilled Operators
A qualified STP operator earns Rs. 25,000–50,000 per month. That's Rs. 3–6 lakhs per year, every year.
Repairs and Downtime
Mechanical equipment fails. Blowers, pumps, aerators all require periodic replacement. Each breakdown means non-compliance until repaired.
Total 20-year cost of a conventional 100 KLD STP (including O&M): Rs. 80 lakhs–1.5 crores above the capital cost. The AER's total 20-year O&M cost for the same capacity: a fraction of that figure.
Why the AER Costs Less Over Time
- Electricity: Up to 80% less. Solar-compatible. No genset required.
- Chemicals: Zero. None. Ever.
- Sludge: No daily handling or disposal costs.
- Labour: Unskilled housekeeping staff sufficient for routine maintenance.
- Repairs: Minimal mechanical components means minimal repair costs.
What to Ask for When Getting STP Quotes
When comparing STP proposals, always ask for:
- Monthly electricity consumption estimate
- Monthly chemical consumption and cost
- Sludge disposal plan and estimated cost
- Operator qualification requirements and salary range
- Expected major maintenance costs in years 5, 10, 15
- Performance guarantee and independent testing commitment
A vendor who cannot or will not provide these figures is not giving you the full picture. At Organic Solutions, we provide full lifecycle cost transparency for every AER proposal.
