Water Bodies

Lake Bioremediation in India — Methods, Costs and Case Studies

By Organic Solutions 9 min read organicsolutions.in

India is losing its water bodies at an alarming rate. Of the hundreds of thousands of lakes and ponds that existed across the country just decades ago, a significant proportion have been encroached upon, polluted, or reduced to sewage drains. Those that remain are often severely degraded — choked with algae, depleted of oxygen, and unable to support aquatic life.

The good news: most degraded lakes and ponds can be restored. Lake bioremediation — the use of biological and ecological processes to restore water quality — has proven effective across dozens of water bodies in India and globally.

What Causes Lake Degradation?

Methods of Lake Bioremediation

1. Nanobubble Technology

Nanobubbles are ultra-fine oxygen bubbles — thousands of times smaller than conventional aeration bubbles — that remain suspended in water for extended periods. Because of their tiny size and large surface area, they transfer oxygen to water with extraordinary efficiency.

The benefits for lake restoration are significant:

2. Surface Aerators

Surface and submersible aerators mechanically introduce oxygen into the water body, supporting aerobic microbial activity and preventing stratification. Particularly effective for smaller, shallower ponds.

3. Floating Wetlands

Engineered floating platforms planted with native aquatic vegetation create in-situ treatment zones within the water body. Plant roots provide surface area for microbial biofilms, absorb nutrients directly, and create habitat for aquatic organisms. Floating wetlands also add visual beauty to restored water bodies.

4. Bioaugmentation

Targeted application of microbial cultures to accelerate the biological breakdown of organic load, algae, and bottom sediment. Organic Solutions manufactures specialised bioculture formulations for water body treatment — produced in-house for consistent quality and efficacy.

Organic Solutions was one of only 4 organisations selected by Gurujal for a pilot project in pond rejuvenation under the Jal Jeevan Mission in Gurugram — in collaboration with Gram Panchayat and District Administration.

Case Study — Khentawas Village Pond, Pataudi, Haryana

A severely degraded village pond receiving untreated sewage from village drains was restored using a 150 KLD AER green STP to treat incoming sewage, combined with bioaugmentation and floating wetland installation. The treated water is now used for pond recharge and agricultural irrigation. The restored pond has become a recreational and ecological asset for the community.

How Long Does Lake Bioremediation Take?

Results depend on the size of the water body, degree of pollution, and combination of interventions used. Typical timelines:

What Does Lake Bioremediation Cost?

Costs vary widely based on lake size, pollution level, and intervention type. Contact Organic Solutions for a site-specific assessment and proposal — we have restored water bodies ranging from small urban ponds to large village lakes across India.
