Solid Waste Treatment

Finding proper and environment friendly methods of disposal of organic wastes is amongst the most pressing topics in township development in the modern world.

In India, Solid waste of more than 30 million tonnes annually ends up on the outskirts of major urban, where the waste is burned, or produces methane while rotting, or results in epidemics and has an adverse effect on rag pickers and sanitary workers.

Environmental pollution, caused by improper treatment and dumping of organic wastes has caused serious environmental and social problems throughout the world. Often engineers have attempted to solve these problems using established chemical and physical methods. However, they have usually found that such problems cannot be solved without using microbial methods and technologies. Proper treatment of kitchen and horticulture wastes not only ensures a better living environment but it also provides us with a useful commodity – compost.

Solid waste in India has low calorific value (between 700 to 1000 Kcal/Kg) and very high moisture content.

The Organic Solutions composting technique ensures that not only do we decompose our solid wastes properly, but do so without the menaces like foul odour, flies/mosquitoes, crows etc.

Using OS1 bacterial solution for decomposing organic wastes has the following benefits

a) Organic garbage/waste can be treated and decomposed into excellent quality compost in 35 to 40 days, which can be used for gardens, potted plants etc.

b) The use of OS1 on organic garbage i.e. kitchen waste, grass cuttings, leaf litter etc., reduces the number of flies and mosquitoes that breed in these areas. Crows etc. do not find the fermented garbage appetizing and thus stay away from the waste.

c) OS1 promotes low temperature fermentation rather than normal putrefaction. This means typical waste odours; oxidizing agents and other unfriendly substances are not produced where these organisms dominate. It reduces any foul smell emitting from rotting garbage etc.

Our technology provides a cost effective and successful alternative to other technologies like pelletization and incinerators.  Pelletization of solid waste for fuel faces very low efficiencies due to the low calorific value of the waste in India. Sun-drying is impossible in the monsoon rains, covered storage of sufficient area is prohibitively costly and artificial drying is energy-negative.  Waste incineration plants have also been facing failures due to low calorific value of the waste and also due to the high inerts and ash in the waste supplied. Waste incineration systems produce pollutants that are detrimental to both human health and the environment. They are expensive and do not eliminate or even adequately control toxic emissions from today's chemically complex waste. Even new incinerators release toxic metals, dioxins and acid gases.
